What’s all this ‘Mono’ business?

Why do I keep banging on about ‘mono’? What does it mean?

Well, the Wikipedia entry says,

Monochrome photography is photography where each position on an image can record and show a different amount of light, but not a different hue.

which simply tells us that either it’s not a colour image or, if it is, all of the pixels are shades of the same basic colour.

So, monochrome (or ‘mono’) photos include black & white, grey, sepia, and also cyanotype and other similar methods of photo processing.

If you see the word ‘mono’ in this blog, think ‘black and white’ if you like, but bear in mind that I might be referring in specific cases to other types of monochrome photography.

Some of these short ‘Aside’ articles will be aimed at newcomers to photography. I won’t make any assumptions as to the reader’s skill level.
